Book Shopping and Reading: My Self-Care Journey
Royal GeeknessThis is not something I’ve shared with many people, but it’s an important part of my story. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, a condition that caused me to lose my hair. This unexpected change took a toll on me, both physically and emotionally. I was struggling to cope, and that’s when I realized I needed to take action for my mental well-being. So, I started therapy.
In therapy, I learned a powerful lesson that has changed my life: focus on the things that bring you joy and take time to enjoy them without guilt. It was eye-opening, and it was the turning point for me. I realized that I was allowed to prioritize myself and my happiness.
I am now in a self-care era, where I no longer feel guilty about putting myself first. For doing the things I love without remorse, without shame. For loving and accepting myself, flaws and all.
One of the things that has become a huge part of my self-care routine is book shopping and reading.
The Joy of Book Shopping
Book shopping has become my little act of rebellion—rebelling against stress, against life’s pressures, and against feeling like I have to do everything for everyone else. Whether I’m browsing through online stores or exploring a local bookstore, there’s something about finding the next book to add to my collection that brings me so much joy. It’s not just about buying books; it’s about discovering new worlds, new stories, and new characters to connect with.
On days when I feel like I need a break from the world, book shopping lets me escape and focus on something that brings me happiness. It’s my way of treating myself—guilt-free.
The Therapeutic Ritual of Reading
But the real magic happens when I start to read. That’s where the self-care truly kicks in. Reading is my therapy. It’s a chance to leave behind the stress and chaos of daily life and dive into something that makes me feel peaceful. Whether it’s a page-turning thriller, an emotional romance, or a captivating fantasy, books have become my sanctuary.
There’s something else I love too—the ritual of rearranging my books when I bring them home. It’s a simple act, but it’s symbolic. Each book gets its place on my shelf, just like each part of my life is finding its place. It reminds me that it’s okay to take things one chapter at a time.
Incorporating Books Into My Life
I no longer see reading as something to squeeze in when I "have time." Now, it’s a part of my everyday life. Whether it’s a chapter during lunch or listening to an audiobook while I walk, those little moments of reading help me feel grounded and connected to myself. They are moments of peace in my busy day.
